So far, this project has been very slow moving. All of the SCE teachers sent us back the google forms so we could contact the parents of the student they had selected. Between my group members and I we had contacted around 4 parents speaking on various activities there child could do. We only got one response from a dad in return, referring to his daughter, Daphne. Daphne, is a first grader and is in the picture below. Her dad dropped her off about 30 minutes before the game and we showed her around the school. She was extremely shy and closed off, but we asked her many questions and were trying to get to know her. She cheered with us on the sideline for a little bit but decided she would rather watch from the sideline. We gave her a cheerleading t-shirt and showed her what a typical varsity basketball game looks like. The energy in the gym was super high this night with it being senior night. This was a really fun experience and something that really impacted me as a person. I think this was a very cool experience for Daphne, but could have been a little chaotic for a first grader. So far, no other parents have got back to us, but we are hoping to give another kid a memorable experience this year!

The project that my team members and I chose was doing The Game Day Experience. This has been done before, but how it works is that we send out an email to some elementary teachers and have them select a student that they think could most benefit from this experience. After we get all students selected, the idea is that they get to experience New Palestine High School sporting/musical events. These students get to be more than a fan. They would most likely get a shirt, get a tour of locker room, and have interactions with High School students. This would hopefully help the child look forward to his or hers high school years and what the high school has to offer. This day will also hopefully make the child feel valued and loved, as high schoolers are pouring into them.
So far, we have only sent out the google forms to the teachers. After we get the students, the next step will be emailing the parents and begin planning the "Game Days." I am super excited to meet children through this project and get to see them so excited. Not only will we so games, but also choir concerts, band concerts, ect. Depending on the kids interests is how we will plan the day. We will do this project through the rest of the winter season and into the spring season! |
